7 Tips to Stay Consistent When Learning a New Language

Many language learners struggle to achieve fluency after many years of studying because they often utilize ineffective study techniques.  The key to learning a new language is consistent practice, but it has to be done strategically.  In this article, we’ll discuss proven study hacks that will help you stay committed to your foreign language learning goals.

Keep Your Learning Materials Accessible

Convenience is important for maintaining consistency. Keeping your learning materials visible (i.e a Korean book on your bedside table or Spanish flashcards in your backpack) makes it easier to study a foreign language than searching around for your learning materials.

Incorporate Practice into Your Daily Routine

Learning a new language doesn’t have to be an extra task in your day. Instead, you can  include small language learning activities into your existing daily or weekly routines. Here are some ideas:
•  Review language vocabulary during coffee breaks.
•  Listen to podcasts or music in your target language during your commute.
•  Read short articles or visit social media pages in your target language.
Adding foreign language practice to your regular routine is an easy way to maintain consistency in your language learning journey.

Study in Short, Focused Sessions.

Studying a foreign language for a long time each day isn’t as effective as many people think! Short, yet focused, language study sessions are actually more effective for acquiring language skills. Here are some ideas for shorter, more effective study sessions:
•  Spend five minutes reviewing new vocabulary.
•  Dedicate another five minutes to speaking practice.
•  Listen to a recording or podcast for about 10 minutes.

Brief, yet consistent language practice sessions add up over time and will help you learn a language faster.

Set Achievable Goals

Setting clear and realistic goals is an effective way to stay consistent in learning a language because these goals will help you to avoid procrastination. You can try targets such as:
• Learning 10 new words each week.
• Mastering a grammar rule within two weeks.
• Hold a two-minute conversation in your target language without making any grammatical or punctuation mistakes.

Stick to a Schedule

A consistent language study routine can be maintained by creating a schedule that blocks out specific days or hours each day  for foreign language practice.

Using a calendar makes things easier because you don’t have to remind yourself to study. A calendar is also a well known psychological hack for prioritizing language learning because a calendar helps you to perceive study sessions as important appointments you should not miss. You can try a color-coded calendar to visualize each language learning activity in your schedule. For example, you can use one color for learning adjectives, another color for conversation practice, etc.

It is important to periodically review which language areas you find challenging  and to adjust your routine accordingly. For example, if you struggle to understand Spanish when it is spoken , you can adjust your weekly schedule to include more listening activities.

Find Accountability Partners

Humans are naturally social beings. Having at least one other person to share your language learning journey with is essential  because we often depend on others for support.
You can find an online or in-person conversation partner or tutor. You can also enroll in an affordable language school, attend language exchange meetups, or join clubs in your area that practice your target language. There are plenty of online groups dedicated to language learning, or you can start your own! These are all great ways to stay consistent in learning a foreign language because most meetups, classes and tutoring sessions occur at scheduled times.

Not only do social interactions make language practice more fun, but they also help you to develop the necessary conversational skills in your target language.

Be Patient with Yourself and Keep Going

Learning a new language takes a lot more time than most people realize. No one who has mastered a foreign language had a perfect learning journey, so expect to miss some days and to make mistakes — these are all a part of the language learning journey! Remember to focus on steady progress overtime and to not get discouraged. With consistent language practice, your language skills will definitely improve!
